Entering the professional world is a major step in becoming an adult, and for Generation Z this transition has been uniquely challenging. Nearly 3 in 4 managers say Gen Z is harder to work with than other cohorts.[1] But rather than blaming young adults, we should understand their context and help them adjust to adulting in the workplace with empathy and practical support.

Understanding Gen Z’s Workforce Challenges

Gen Z has come of age amid a global pandemic, remote work, rising costs, and social unrest. It’s no surprise many feel anxious and unsettled. Almost 27% of Gen Z workers say their job leaves them feeling depressed at least once a week.[2] Many young adults carry student debt and worry about making ends meet. Only 41% of Gen Z believe they’ll ever own a home, and about a quarter don’t expect to be able to fully retire[3] – traditional adult milestones that now feel out of reach. On every front, from mental well-being to economic security, Gen Z’s early work experiences have been challenging.

Another difference is how Gen Z views work itself. Growing up with technology and witnessing their parents weather recession and burnout, they often prioritize work-life balance and purpose. A McKinsey study found a remarkable 77% of Gen Z employees are actively looking for a new job, almost double the rate of older generations.[4]

Practical Strategies to Support Gen Z “Adulting” at Work

As business leaders we have a role in helping Gen Z navigate adult life in the workplace. And Gen Z themselves can take proactive steps. Here are some strategies for both employers and young professionals to consider:

  • Foster Open Communication: Encourage Gen Z employees to ask questions and seek feedback. Regular check-ins can demystify the unwritten rules of adult working life and help new hires feel valued. For Gen Zers, speaking up about needs or uncertainties (respectfully) shows initiative and helps managers support you better.

  • Offer Mentorship and Training: Companies can pair young staff with seasoned mentors to coach them on everything from client communication to career planning. If you’re a Gen Z adult feeling lost, try finding a mentor from which to learn.

  • Provide Clear Growth Paths: Uncertainty about the future fuels anxiety. Companies can help by outlining transparent career paths and skill development opportunities. For Gen Z team members, knowing how you can grow within the organization makes “adulting” at work less overwhelming and more goal-oriented.

  • Show Empathy and Support: Finally, a little understanding goes a long way. Instead of harsh criticism, coach Gen Z through challenges. Likewise, young professionals can practice self-compassion. You’re not expected to master all aspects of being an adult immediately. It’s okay to ask for help, whether it’s about a work task or managing stress. However, stress does happen at work and as you take on other responsibilities. Gen Z employees should work on stress management techniques to make their stress productive.
